Cannabinoids for Spasticity in Patients With MS
TAKE-HOME MESSAGE
- Spasticity management in people living with MS can be challenging, and many of the current therapies can be associated with significant side effects, including severe drowsiness and, in some patients, such as those taking baclofen, an increased risk of mortality with intentional overdoses. Cannabinoids are a promising treatment option for spasticity in patients with MS; however, a recent clinical trial in the US was terminated early owing to lack of clinical benefit upon early analysis. Nonetheless, nabiximols is used in many countries to treat MS-related spasticity based on positive clinical trials and other studies. In this systematic review, the authors confirm that nabiximols effectively controls MS-related spasticity (as measured by the numeric rating scale and the Ashworth Scale), calling for further consideration of this treatment regimen for MS-related spasticity.
