Herman, MD, MPH, is the Stefan S. Fajans/GlaxoSmithKline Professor of Diabetes, Professor of Internal Medicine in the Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Diabetes, and Professor of Epidemiology in the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan. He is an internationally recognized clinician and researcher in diabetes. His clinical interests focus on the management of diabetes, its complications, and comorbidities. His research focuses on the broad areas of clinical trials, epidemiology, health services research, and clinical economics. Professor Herman has served as a principal investigator for the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT), the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), and the Glycemia Reduction Approaches for Diabetes: A Comparative Effectiveness (GRADE) Study. In 2006, he received the American Diabetes Association’s Kelly West Award for outstanding achievement in epidemiology. He chairs the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) Workgroup on Diabetes Quality Measures and has chaired the American Diabetes Association Professional Practice Committee. From 2018 to 2021, he chaired the National Clinical Care Commission.
