Blumenthal is The Kenneth Jay Pollin Professor of Cardiology, Professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and is the Director of the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. Dr. Blumenthal graduated with honors from the Landon School in Bethesda and the Johns Hopkins University. He received his medical degree from Cornell Medical College, where he was awarded the Weiss Prize for Excellence in Clinical Medicine. He did his Internal Medicine and Cardiology fellowship training at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
His principal clinical and research interests involve the optimal management of atherosclerotic vascular disease and the development of new strategies to optimize the management of cardiovascular disease risk factors. He is an expert in the pathogenesis, treatment, and prevention of atherosclerotic vascular disease. Dr. Blumenthal was the principal developer of the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease. Dr. Blumenthal is on the official national spokesperson panel for the American Heart Association (AHA). He has co-written more than 400 articles dealing with many aspects of coronary artery disease and atherosclerosis management.
An experienced writer, Dr. Blumenthal is on the editorial board of Cardiology Today, the American Heart Journal, and Clinical Cardiology. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association’s Epidemiology and Prevention Council. He was co-editor-in-chief of the 2011 textbook Preventive Cardiology – A Companion to Braunwald’s Heart Disease. For many years he has been the medical editor of the annual Johns Hopkins White Paper on Prevention of Heart Attacks. He is also the medical editor of the Scientific American White Paper on Coronary Artery Disease.
For four years, he was the Chairperson of the American College of Cardiology Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease Committee. He currently serves as co-chairperson with Dr. Mariell Jessup on the ACC/AHA subcommittee that will update the current Prevention guidelines in the areas of Hypertension, Cholesterol Management, and Cardiovascular Risk Assessement. He is co-editor of the 2015 American Society of Preventive Cardiology (ASPC) Manual of Preventive Cardiology that examines all of the major guidelines pertaining to atherosclerotic vascular disease.
