He directs the Center for Cranial Nerve and Brainstem Disorders at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center where more than 1000 patients with a variety of cranial neuralgias such as trigeminal neuralgia, hemifacial spasm, glossopharyngial neuralgia and other conditions are evaluated each year. His laboratory investigations concern the elucidation of the basic mechanisms of cranial neuralgias.
