Maya Balakrishnan is Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Section of Gastroenterology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, and a staff physician at the Ben Taub General Hospital. Dr Balakrishnan is committed to reducing health inequities and focuses on common liver diseases that disproportionately affect vulnerable populations. 

Dr. Balakrishnan's clinical interests include all aspects of liver and gastrointestinal disease. In addition, Dr. Balakrishnan applies her background in public health to understand how biological susceptibility works alongside behavioral, social, and environmental risk factors to promote chronic liver disease progression with the ultimate goal of developing scalable interventions. She established the inter-disciplinary NAFLD program at Ben Taub General Hospital and oversees several phase 2 and 3 clinical trials as a principal investigator.

Dr. Balakrishnan earned her medical degree from Harvard Medical School and her Masters in Public Health from Harvard School of Public Health, in Boston, Massachusetts.  She completed her residency, chief residency, and gastroenterology fellowship at Yale University.
