Kusum S. Mathews MD, MPH, MSCR
Assistant Professor, Medicine, Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, & Sleep Medicine, Emergency Medicine; Associate Program Director for Pulmonary, Critical Care, & Sleep Medicine Fellowship, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, New YorkDr. Mathews is an adult intensivist and a health services researcher in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, & Sleep Medicine and Department of Emergency Medicine. She graduated with an M.D. and M.P.H. from Tufts University School of Medicine and completed her internship and residency at Yale University School of Medicine (YSM)/Yale-New Haven Hospital, followed by a year as a Clinical Instructor in YSM Section of General Internal Medicine. She completed a clinical and T32-funded research fellowship in Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine at Yale, and then joined the faculty at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) in 2013. She received a K-12 scholar position in the NHLBI-funded Mount Sinai Emergency Medicine Research Career Development Program for two years.
Dr. Mathews serves as a co-investigator for Mount Sinai on the NHLBI Clinical Trials Network for the Prevention and Early Treatment of Acute Lung Injury, the SCCM Discovery Network, and collaborates with the University of Michigan Acute Care Research Unit. She is also the Site PI for the BREATHE Trial, an adaptive randomized placebo-controlled trial to assess efficacy and safety of gimsilumab in COVID-19 related respiratory failure, as well as Co-Investigator on other COVID therapeutic-related clinical trials. Dr. Mathews was the recipient of the 2016 American Thoracic Society Foundation Unrestricted Grant in Critical Care and is currently supported by an NHLBI K23 mentored research career development award, examining pre-ICU critical care delivery.
Membership: Active member and former Chair-Elect of the ATS Critical Care Assembly (CCA) Early Career Professionals Working Group; Co-Chair of the ATS CCA Pre-ICU Critical Care Working Group; Member, ATS CCA Women in Critical Care Interest Group; Member in ACCP, SCCM, and SAEM.
