Chief Medical Information Officer, Family Medicine Physician, Visiting Associate Professor, UW Health/University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, Madison, Wisconsin

Dr. Joel Gordon currently serves as the Chief Medical Information Officer at UW Health, a recent appointment that aligns with his passion for advancing key areas such as innovation diffusion, provider wellness, and organizational efficiency. Prior to this role, Dr. Gordon held the position of CMIO at Mayo Clinic’s community practice, where he notably became the first board-certified physician informaticist in the Mayo Clinic Health System. During his tenure, he witnessed significant growth in Health IT, with the most challenging transformation being the implementation of Epic.

In 2023, Dr. Gordon strategically relocated to Madison, Wisconsin, placing himself at the epicenter of informatics and in close proximity to Epic. Joining a robust Medical Informatics group, with focus on the three spheres of informatics impact: clinical, academic, and research, has brought Dr. Gordon great pleasure.

During the inaugural year of this new chapter, Dr. Gordon led the UW Health Informatics team to achieve noteworthy milestones. One standout accomplishment was the pioneering use of ChatGPT large language models for patient messaging within the UW production domain of Epic. Driven by enablement, strategic partnerships, and system improvements, Dr. Gordon’s overarching drive centers on enhancing provider well-being and operational efficiencies. This commitment has resulted in remarkable healthcare outcomes for both UW Health and the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.
