Professor Emeritus of Family Medicine, Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Dennis Butler, PhD, is a licensed psychologist who served as a residency-based Director of Behavioral Science for 39 years in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin. His responsibilities included teaching behavioral medicine to primary care physicians, family medicine and psychiatry residents, and medical students. He was appointed to emeritus status at Medical College of Wisconsin in 2018.

Dr. Butler received his doctorate from Marquette University and he completed a fellowship with the Victor Gollancz Foundation in Germany focused on the design and delivery of mental health services in the Federal Republic of Germany. His clinical background includes training in psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavior therapy and family therapy and he began providing mental health services in 1975.

From 2004 to 2018 Dr. Butler served as the Program Chair for The Forum for Behavioral Science in Family Medicine, a national conference devoted to the integration and advancement of behavioral science in primary care and medical education. His research interests include reactions to traumatic medical and psychological events, medical education, physician well-being and the integration of mental health service in medical care. He served as an advisory member on the International Journal of Psychiatry in Medicine Editorial Board and was co-editor of five of the journal’s annual medical education issues.

Dr. Butler received the Marquette University College of Education Achievement Award in 2010. He was recognized by the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine in 2012 with The President’s Award for his contribution to developing a behavioral science fellowship, and, in 2014, he received the Department of Family Medicine Chairman’s Outstanding Faculty Award. In 2020, Dr. Butler was honored by his professional colleagues in the The Society of Teachers of Family Medicine with the Susan McDaniel Distinguished Career Award in recognition of his mentorship, educational innovations, dedication to advancing behavioral science and advocacy for professional well-being.
