Carson III, MD, is the Rhodes Distinguished Professor and former chief of Urology at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Previously, he served as a Professor of Urology and Director of the Duke Male Sexual Dysfunction Clinic. Dr Carson in a graduate of Trinity College in Hartford CT and received his MD from The George Washington University where he received the Calvin Klopp Award for outstanding research. Following two years of surgery residency at the Dartmouth Medical Center, he completed two years as a flight surgeon in the USAF. He completed a urology residency and fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN.
Dr. Carson was the Editor-in-Chief of Contemporary Urology, where he was awarded the 2001 Jesse H. Neal Award for editorial writing; he serves as the Editor of Sexual Medicine Reviews; and Associate Editor of Trends in Men’s Health and Urology. He has published more than 300 peer review publications and eight textbooks. He is the author of Textbook of Erectile Dysfunction, which was awarded the 2001 Book Prize by the Royal College of Medicine. His honors include: USAF Flight Surgeon of the Year 1974, David Cristol Award from the Mayo Alumni Association, Distinguished Contribution Award from the American Urological Associationin 2011, St Paul’s Medal from the British Association of Urologic Surgeons 2014 and honorary fellowship in the Royal College of Surgeons. He is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, Sigma Xi and Psi Chi.
Dr. Carson is an active member of the American Urological Association, International Society for Sexual Medicine, the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons, and the American Surgical Association. Dr. Carson is past president of the Sexual Medicine Society, Southeast section of the AUA and the Society of University Urologists. He is president American Society for Men’s Health.
