Chen received his medical degree from the University of Auckland in Auckland, New Zealand. He completed his residency in neurology in Auckland, New Zealand and additional post-graduate training through the Queen Square Institute of Neurology, UCL, in London, United Kingdom, where was awarded a Master of Science in Clinical Neurology with Distinction. With support from the Neurological Foundation of New Zealand, Dr. Chen then undertook a neuro‑ophthalmology fellowship at Emory Eye Center in Atlanta, Georgia.
Dr. Chen is currently a Cambridge-Rutherford Memorial Scholar at the University of Cambridge in Cambridge, United Kingdom, where he is completing his doctoral studies in the field of mitochondrial diseases, with a specific focus on inherited optic neuropathies and outcome measures in clinical trials. As part of this, he has helped to establish the Cambridge Clinical Vision Laboratory, an innovative cross-cutting facility developed to facilitate advanced therapeutic studies for ocular and neurological diseases in Cambridge, United Kingdom.
Dr. Chen is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP), and member of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Neurologists (ANZAN), North American Neuro-ophthalmology Society (NANOS), and American Academy of Neurology (AAN).
